Ask President Obama to Protect Organic and Stop Monsanto’s GE Alfalfa!

The USDA is about to approve Monsanto’s genetically engineered alfalfa. One of the biggest impacts of allowing the use of GE alfalfa is contamination of other crops, including organic alfalfa, which is used by most organic dairies. The USDA actually acknowledges the problem of contamination, but is moving forward anyway.

We need to let the USDA and President Obama know that consumers don’t want genetically engineered foods, and don’t want organic foods to be contaminated.

Take action to stop the approval for Monsanto’s GE alfalfa.

    Dear Washington-area Food Blogger:

It’s no secret that with 13 million people working in foodservice, the industry is one of the largest private-sector employers in the United States, and—according to the National Restaurant Association—is expected to add another 1.8 million jobs over the next decade. Anyone considering a career as a chef, baker, or other foodservice industry leader should attend The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Admissions reception in Washington, DC.

The Admissions reception will be held at the JW Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, on Monday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. Aspiring culinarians will have the opportunity to meet CIA representatives and learn about the college’s range of degree programs, educational benefits, and scholarship opportunities. The evening will be hosted by CIA alumnus John Huppman ’78, executive chef at the JW Marriott Hotel.

Despite the economy, foodservice continues to be a major growth industry, and interest in culinary careers is rising among both career changers and “traditional” college students. Food Jobs, a 2009 World Cookbook Award-winning book by CIA instructor Irena Chalmers, describes 150 career options in various segments of the foodservice industry. Graduates hold prestigious positions in a variety of careers. In addition to being top chefs, pastry chefs, and bakers, CIA alumni are leaders in catering, research and development, education, food styling, food journalism, and many other food-related fields.

To learn more about the reception or to find out about available entry dates, please contact The Culinary Institute of America at 1-800-CULINARY (285-4627) or visit www.ciachef.edu.

Founded in 1946, The Culinary Institute of America is an independent, not-for-profit college offering bachelor’s and associate degrees in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts, and certificate programs in culinary arts and wine and beverage studies. As the world’s premier culinary college, the CIA has a network of more than 40,000 alumni that includes industry leaders such as Grant Achatz, Anthony Bourdain, Michael Chiarello, Cat Cora, Steve Ells, Todd English, Duff Goldman, Sara Moulton, Charlie Palmer, and Roy Yamaguchi. The college has campuses in New York (Hyde Park), California (The CIA at Greystone, St. Helena), and Texas (San Antonio), and an international location in Singapore. In addition to its degree programs, the CIA offers courses for professionals and enthusiasts, as well as consulting services for the foodservice and hospitality industry. Update (January, 2011): Corner dish has closed its doors.

I know you’re reading this and looking out at your small (or large) patch of land and wondering what you’re going to do all winter long with nothing to look at.  Well, snap out of it!  I’m here to tell you there IS something you can do.  You can plant!

P.S. it’s bulb season, but I’m sure you already knew that! Putting the daffodils and tulips in the ground now, with a wee bit of fertilizer, will produce beautiful Buckets (that’s Bouquets) in the spring!  But while they may look good on the table, we can’t eat them.  So dig ye some holes, and fertilize with aplomb.

It’s time for strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.  The cool night air and the hot sun in the morning make the perfect combination of growing goodness.  And listen, I live on a farm now, I should now!  Or at least the 150 year old farmer in the John Deere trucker hat telling me this at the local feed store should know!  He’s 150 after all!  With these plants, you get the watering out of the way in the fall.  They should be watered quasi-regularly until the first frost.  But after that, you’ll be saved the crazy watering of the spring.  And just so you know, you should chop off all the flowers on your strawberries the first year so they can focus on their root growth.  Doing this in the fall, you can let them bloom away in the spring!

It’s a rough world out there.  A dangerous world.  Bumblebees are crashing into police cars for goodness sake!  Control what you can.  Plants are easy.  Water and fertilize.  People say they kill plants.  Plants are like children.  And many of those people have children.  Think of the summer benefits – strawberry shortcake, blueberry crumble, and raspberries for salads! Jack Frost may be on his way, but Mother Nature is still the Heavy Weight champion.
