Thanks to Lauren DeSantis for featuring DCFüd (and…ok…me) on her site.

Debbie Miller passed this to us. We do have vegan readers too…or is that just Debbie? 😉

Dear PCRM supporter,
Three hotdog vendors in downtown D.C. are selling Tofurky vegan franks all summer long and they’re only $1 each!
Some of these vendors have been selling exclusively all-beef hotdogs for nearly 20 years and this is the first time they have ever tried vegan dogs. Please visit these vendors, and let them know how excited you are that they are selling veggie dogs and that they should sell them year-round.
Here are the locations:
Once other vendors see that there is a high demand for veggie dogs, they will begin to sell them too—so be sure to take your friends, family, and co-workers with you!
Have a healthy, happy summer!

Ed Witt, the New York City chef who came to DC over a year ago to serve as chef for a new Turkish restaurant being planned in Georgetown, finally got into the kitchen when Morso opened late last month. Just weeks after Morso’s opening, however, Chef Witt has left that post; Morso is announcing that it is temporarily closed, although its take-out location, Morso Express, is still in business. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Chef Witt will be joining Knightsbridge Restaurant Group, but his tweet indicates that an official announcement will be coming soon.
DCist is reporting that the D.C. outpost of Philadelphia/Orlando/Atlantice City Cuban restaurant Cuba Libre, to be located at 9th and H Streets NW, is postponing its opening, originally slated for June, til September, despite the fact that the restaurant’s website still says Spring 2010 opening.
Roberto Donna pled guilty last week to felony embezzlement in connection with his now closed restaurant Bebo, City Paper’s Tim Carman reports.

The good news is, some of us are over-employed (that’s good, right?). Some of us have even moved away from the DC area *gasp* to go to graduate school.
But the bad news is a dry spell for the FUD at the moment. So, to
counteract this terrible state of affairs, we are looking for…..
A FEW NEW WRITERS!!
Were you annoyed by a restaurant?
Do you have some random recipes to share?
Have you discovered the best wine or restaurant in DC?
Do you want to write a comparison article for a particular item or dish?
Need some hipster cred? (Good, since that is how we are compensated. )
Then we want you for DCFUD. Send any sort of writing sample to
jay@dcfud.com, along with a couple ideas you’d like to write
about. It’ll be crazy!
Smith Meadows Grill is a Truck that cooks the meat from their farm (Smith Meadows Farm in Berryville, VA) with veggies from other Courthouse Farmer’s market vendors (like Toigo). Look for them Saturdays at Courthouse. The halfsmoke and (especially) the relish were good, and the iced tea wasn’t sweet enough. I’ll try a burger and a cold ham biscuit next time. Rashid (who runs the Grill) sent me the below email.

An Aussie friend passed this article on to me, and I really do think it’s an interesting concept to be debated. Basically, Sydney chef Yukako Ichikawa got sick of patrons who didn’t met her standards, particularly those involving the clean-plate club. She posted rules on her restaurant’s door, stating that patrons are required to eat everything on the plate – except a few selected garnishes (for this, I question her commitment to Sparkle Motion) – or be forced to pay extra and/or be banned from returning. She turns people away for any number of a priori violations.
Apparently, she remains in business.
While I certainly applaud the idea of not wasting so much food – the quantities thrown out are staggering, even outside of oversize American chains like Outback, etc. – this seems a bit too precious. What do you all think?

I went Flavor Tripping at EFN Lounge last weekend. The berry didn’t work very well so he gave us tablets (freeze dried berries) to dissolve on our tongues, and they worked fine. He is going to use a better berry supplier next month.
So, your tongue gets rewired for an hour or so to read sour as sweet.
There was a buffet which contained various fruits (lemons, limes, kiwis, strawberries, oranges, etc. They also had pickles (tasted the same), and various sour candies. You could also take shots of hot sauce (yum), white vinegar (yum), and soy sauce (yuck). The fruit generally tasted like a candy (strawberry = starburst) version or like a stronger, sweeter but less acidic version of itself (limes, grapefruit). They could have had someone circulating selling appropriate shots.
It was a fun trippy experience with a good crowd. You can try it at EFN 2nd Friday next (or any) month. Or, buy some of the tablets on Amazon, and host a flavor tripping party for your friends.
We got tacos afterwards at Taqueria Distrito Federal with our altered taste buds. heh.
