I recently went on a wine tour through Virginia.  Gray Ghost here and Rappahannock Cellars there.  (P.S.  the pourer at Rappahannock is against health care reform – hello Virginia – I almost spit out my Norton…almost.)  My binge journey through the Rappahannock Valley, which I heartily suggest you take as it’s only two hours away, was awakened by a new, and unique, winery of choice.  Narmada.

Narmada is new.  It’s most fun attribute, without sounding like the newest installment of Sassy Gay Friend, is that it is owned by an Indian family.  Having planted a few years ago, the wine has finally come of age.  Apparently, however, the chicken tikka masala hasn’t.

They serve food.  Yes, a winery that serves food.  It’s smart, and god bless someone for coming up with the idea.  But the masala, hello, cardboard.  You would think, simmer the chicken in the sauce all day.  Well, that isn’t the Narmada thinking.  But the wines are good.  And there was live music!  Oh, and did I mention there was food?!  Other wineries need to catch on to this craze.  A quick appetizer with your tasting can seal the deal.  We asked if the varietals planted were meant to compliment Indian foods but received a questionable, if not full no, response; a missed opportunity.

Right now in my wine cellar, I have Midnight.  I also bought a shirt in their gift shop.  While it might seem a little kitschy, and the front door is oddly placed, it’s refreshing to see a completely new concept push in to the, errr, established Virginia winery scene.  The food has promise, I like the live music, and I like the grandmother and father sitting on the couch.  It’s a new atmosphere.  And every other winery we visited would mention Narmada and insist we go.  It was also packed with people – by far the most out of the six wineries we visited.  I wish them success as they continue to refine their menu and perfect their blends.

    DC Food Wars Airing Party

Tues, April 13th, Grand Central, 2447 18th Street NW, Washington, DC, 8:30-11pm

It’s next week! Finally! While the District of Columbia is best known for politics and historical landmarks, who would have thought that a jumbo-sized pizza slice could create such a stir? It’s a real Food War — with two warring brothers behind it all. Only one brother can win this food war. Which is it going to be, Pizza Mart or Jumbo Slice? You’ll have to watch to find out (I’m sworn to secrecy). It’s going to be exciting! Join us to watch the airing of DC’s Food Wars at Grand Central with other Fans and a one of the owners of the pizza establishments in the Food War!

If you haven’t heard, the new series titled FOOD WARS aired beginning March 9 on the Travel Channel. The host, Camille Ford, has been visiting various cities around the country and learning about their iconic food dishes. Camille has traveled to Minneapolis, Texas, Kansas, Tucson, and next up on their food journey: Washington, DC for the “Jumbo Slice.” The DC Food Wars with Dining in DC’s Lisa Shapiro, who served as a judge for the blindfolded taste test will air on Tuesday, April 13 at 10:00 p.m. EST. Who else is a local favorite? Yep! That’s right! Carla Hall. She may not be able to attend, but we’re working on it.

Here’s a Dining in DC article about the episode.

This was a great April Fools joke from Starbucks.  BTW, KFC wants their bucket back, and Starbucks always had those little espresso shot cups.

Mini-rant: honestly, I’d love it if they just rename their sizes to small, medium, and large since their current sizing makes no sense:

    • Tall is their small and those two words mean very different things.
    • Grande is their medium but it means “large” in Spanish (and I’d presume Italian).
    • Venti is their large, and it means “twenty” in Italian, but while their vent hot cups are 20 ounces, their venti cold cups are 24.

I just order small, medium, and large, and it used to be that Starbucks employees would be snooty about it, but they have been better about it in the last couple of years.

Too bad Via wasn’t an April fools joke, but if it was as good as Elite or BRU, I’d be alright with it.

    Book Tour

I am really thrilled about my new book, Giada at Home: Family Recipes From Italy and California, because it’s the best of traditional Italian meals that I grew up with and my new favorite dishes that are Italian with a lighter, California flair. This book has some of my all time favorite recipes. For instance, my Pasta Ponza. The idea of Pasta Ponza came from a dinner my Aunt Raffy and I had at a family friend’s house in Ponza, which is an island off the west coast of Italy. It is so fresh and delicious. I am really excited for you all to try this recipe. I also love my Pea Pesto Crostini. It’s simple and really easy to make. It’s a great go- to recipe that never fails. Plus, it really looks beautiful on a platter! On March 29, I will be leaving LA to start my book tour. The tour will take me to many cities including NYC (for the Today Show), Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Vegas, Dallas, Chicago and much more. Book tour is very busy and tiring, but so much fun because I get to meet and talk to all of you! It’s a really special time for me. Please look over my book tour schedule and contact the stores directly for more information. I hope to see you there!
