С Днем Рождения (or, Happy Birthday in Russian) to Mari Vanna!

Mari Vanna, a Dupont favorite, celebrated its two-year anniversary in style on Tuesday night, February 24th. The birthday celebration took place at the third floor cocktail lounge of the Russian bar. At the opening of the event, guests entered the lounge to Mari Vanna’s usual electro-house sound. Upon arrival, we were treated to an open bar of vodka and champagne. The house-infused vodka list featured some of the most distinctive vodka flavors I’ve had the pleasure of trying. In particular, the refreshing cucumber and dill vodka stood out as a favorite. It paired well with the strong flavors of the Russian bites, one of which was the melt-in-your-mouth salmon and cream cheese roll. Other heart-warming tarts were the cured herring on rye, the Olivier salad, and the vinegret bites. The amount of food at this event seemed endless, with the plates quickly refilled one after the other. It was much needed, as the lounge soon became packed with guests.

Once guests had plenty of time to enjoy their food and drink, internationally renowned accordionist Peter Dranga took center stage. Not too long after Dranga started playing, guests paused in their chatter to circle around. They could either be seen capturing the moment with their smartphones or dancing to the music. You could, really, feel the excitement in the air. Dranga’s passionate energy and upbeat dance music brought big smiles and cheers to the lively crowd. Simply speaking, Dranga makes the accordion cool.

Then, the huge chocolate birthday cake and more champagne emerged. The night felt like one fun indulgence after another, for the pleasure of the ears, mouth, and heart. Mari Vanna knows how to celebrate their birthday right. I will definitely be going back to Mari Vanna soon.

A year ago, we wrote about Mari Vanna’s opening party. This week, we attended Mari Vanna’s one year anniversary party! We had a blast drinking house-infused vodka shots, including the pear and the pumpkin. We also tried some great food including pelmeni (dumplings)–you should try them at Mari Vanna’s “Pelmeni Tuesdays.” Above are some pictures of what we ate at the party.

You can view the Sochi 2014 Olympics at Mari Vanna DC, February 7-23! And, tomorrow night is their kickoff party for viewing the Sochi Olympics:

“Feb 7th kick-off party from 6-9pm featuring: one complimentary vodka shot for all patrons complimentary pirozhki tasting station All Mari Vanna TVs will air NBC’s Sochi Olympics Coverage.”

Last night Cy and I attended the Preview Party for three-floor DC outpost of Russian restaurant,  Mari Vanna. In the United States, MV has three restaurants: LA, NYC, and now, DC.

Last night, they had a blini station on the first floor. Blinis are very thin crepes you eat with a variety of toppings. My favorite blini toppings were the butter fish and the sour cherries. My favorite of the appetizers was the Russian sausage with cucumber.

I got to speak to one of the servers, Beau Pineda, who is also a bartender who helps design the drinks (often using molecular mixology) at MV. He had the bartender Sam (who also designs drinks for MV) make me a honey oat martini, which was very good. Cy had a drink made with strawberry vodka.  We both enjoyed wasabi vodka shots, but our favorite drink of the evening was something Beau made for us special, the Grusha, which was made with pear vodka, St. Germain Elder Flower, lemon, simple syrup, and raspberry and Mors Bitters cavier, and was topped off with Russian Champagne.

I was told that MV would be opening on the 21st, but earlier today I received an email saying that they are open for dinner tonight.
